The progressive competition is part of the annual Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions that culminates with national and ultimately, the Grand Finals in New York.

The auditions program, now more than 50 years old, is designed to discover promising young talent. Winners often secure new opportunities, including at the Met, as well as cash prizes. In 2007, filmmaker Susan Froemke followed a number of singers through the process to produce "The Audition," a feature-length documentary.

The competition is open to singers between the ages of 20 and 30 and has launched the careers of many opera stars, including Kathleen Battle, Renee Fleming, Denyce Graves, Thomas Hampson, Ben Heppner, Jessye Norman, Shirley Verrett and Deborah Voigt.

Three judges at the January 31st competition determined which singer advanced as a semi-finalist to the national finals; Patrice Wise - Retired Professor of Voice Indiana University, Evans Mirageas - Artistic Director Cincinnati Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera representative, Kevin Murphy - Professor of Practice/Indiana University Opera Theatre.
